Merry Christmas!

This will come as no surprise but I've been a bit consumed by the hustle and bustle of the season. I've really been enjoying wrapping gifts, baking cookies, entertaining friends and spending time with family. Oh yea, and I've been enjoying holiday beverages from 'Bucks as often as possible. ;-) My clients have also kept me busy with orders and editing...I feel so very grateful for this! It is for these reasons the blog has been so quite lately.

I've made the decision to sign off for the year! I want to dedicate my time to the true reason of the season and enjoy the cheer and joy it brings. I'm sure you will all be busy with festivities of your own and won't even miss me much!

I wish all of you a very merry Christmas. May you and yours be blessed throughout the season and into the new year too! Next year is going to be a great one. I just know it! I'll be back soon.

xo,
Lindsey

Operation Christmas Child

For the past few years I have participated in Operation Christmas Child and this year was no exception. Hubby and I put together two boxes this year and I wish I would have had time to do more.  I'm blogging about it again because I really feel that Samaritan's Purse is such a great operation and that this project is worth while. Take a look at the video below to see what I mean...

You can pack your own shoebox (it is so much fun!) and find a drop off location here.
Or if you like to shop online, you can now Build-A-Box!
A really neat perk is you can Follow Your Box and find out where it was delivered and how you helped out.

Please join me in helping spread joy and blessing this Christmas.

Great Full (almost) Friday

I hope that you are currently drifting into dreamland with a belly full of yummy treats and a heart full of love. We spent the day with the hubby's family and enjoyed some great time with his grandmother. Afterward we headed to my parents to say hello and spent the rest of the evening relaxing while watching movies.

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful day...every one is reminded to be grateful and to appreciate blessings big and small. I know I become more aware of the beauty around me on this day. It is my hope to carry this feeling with me the entire year through.

E is for Evening Sky

I am grateful today for many things but I'd like to list a few that stand out in my mind today as making my life especially great and full:
  • a Lord who has given grace, new life and forgiveness
  • my husband
  • my family: parents, sister, cousins, uncles, in-laws...all mean the world to me
  • visible evidence of God's love. today it was glorious sunlight beaming from behind the clouds.
  • a full belly and warm bed. little things often overlooked in daily gratitudes
  • clients who allow me to do what i love
  • fabulous online buddies who have helped me grow and offered their friendship
  • my sweet pup
Today I hope you'll join me and take a moment to count your blessings.
Happy, happy Thanksgiving and thank YOU for reading!

Glam Gingerbread

As I mentioned...I'm so ready for the holidays this year. Can't wait to decorate, enjoy cold weather with a cup of hot cocoa and of course decorate gingerbread houses. My hubby and I have done our fair share of gingerbread houses--all via the simple kits found at any store. I'm thinking this year it would be really, really fun to take things up a notch with the Gingerhaus kits from Sur La Table. I'd love to make an entire village.

So do you have any holiday traditions that you are looking forward to?

Spooky Shades

When it comes to fall & Halloween decor I'm quite set. In fact I have to restrain myself this time of year because I could easily add and add to my collection until my home was bursting at the seems. What can I say? It is my favorite time of year (fall that is)!

As much as I love these spooky shades, I'm thankful that I don't have a chandelier that could use them. I'm not sure I could resist their glowing charm.

What is your favorite season to decorate for?

Not So Spooky!

The little ghosts remind me a bit of the nemesis on Pac-man, or Mrs. Pac-man--my favorite.
Don't you just love fall?

Great Full Sunday

Had a great week and this weekend is amazing thus far. The sun is out here and while it is hot, hot, hot I'm still excited to see some rays. We haven't ironed out plans for the day but I think we'll be playing a round of putt-putt...wish me luck!

I thought I'd post this sweet message I got from reader Relyn, it is exactly what I wish for all of my fellow Americans today:

"May your day be full! May you enjoy laughter shared with family, great food shared with friends, fireworks to make you gasp, a lump in your throat at the anthem, and a full and grateful heart at all we have been given. Happy Fourth of July!"

Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend. If you are here in the USA please remember to keep our soldiers, politicians and officials in your prayers. I am so thankful to live in this great country.

This week I am grateful for:
  • long weekends
  • a really clean house
  • date nights
  • freedom
What made your week great and full?

    Happy Father's Day!

I don't think there are a lot of father's reading my blog but I know that you guys have a father (or father figure) in your life. So happy Father's Day to them!

Let me tell you a bit about my dad...
He's protective of his girls (me, my sister and my mom) in a lot of ways.  With the men in our lives (my sister and I only) he's always looked out for us and only wanted the best guys for us. When it comes to school and career choices he encourages us to do what we love and strive to be happy first. No matter where we travel he'll always check our tires before we go and make sure our car's fluids are okay. He always wants only the best for us and for that I am so thankful.

My dad was anti-trans fats before food distributors had to mark their hydrogenated oils on the nutritional label by government mandate. Before Dr. Oz was talking about high fructose corn syrup my dad was trying to find a shop locally that carried Mexican Coca-cola (it is made with cane sugar). Jamie Oliver wasn't on TV preaching about organic foods when my dad was scouring the grocery store for Horizon Milk. And a grass fed, free range farm was located before most of the population knew they existed. No, my dad is not psychic he is just always looking out for what's best for him and those around him. This is evidenced by the emails with links directing us to the healthiest options and latest breakthroughs. Mildly annoying...sometimes. Thoughtful...always.

So today I've conjured up a great treat for my pops. An entire meal made from scratch. Not a single processed item. Nothing from a box. Every single ingredient is in its natural form first. Organic eggs, free-range chicken, real sugar and fresh veggies grown locally. Here's what's on the menu*:

    • Fresh black bean salsa
    • Gaucamole
    • Chicken Enchiladas (I made the flour tortillas myself!)
    • Homemade Chocolate Icecream
    • From Scratch Dark Chocolate Caramel Bacon Brownies

If I get the chance tomorrow I'll be whipping up some fresh sweet tea (that is how we do it down south) but if not the only "slipup" on the menu will be Dos Equis Lager and Mexican Coca Cola.

I have a feeling my dad will popping by to take a peek at the menu.
    So, happy Father's Day Dad!
    I love you!!!

*Obviously I haven't eaten these items yet so I'm not sure if they are worth sharing but I sure hope they are. If so I'll pass them along to you guys next week.

    Happy Mother's Day!

Happy, happy Mother's Day to my wonderful, beautiful, inspiring, amazing, one-of-a-kind mom! Not a day goes by that I'm not thankful to have you as my mom + best friend. I love you!!!

I hope that all of my readers who are mothers have a wonderful day and that all non-moms get to celebrate their own mother's in a special way. And on this Mother's Day please join me in keeping Danni and her mom in your prayers. Give your mom and extra big hug today if you can in honor of Danni & her mom. Moms = the best.

    How He Loves Us

This song really speaks to my heart and I can't think of a more perfect song to share with you today as we celebrate the joy of our Lord's resurrection. It is truly a day for celebration because He really loves us, love us so. Listen to the song...it is worth it! I've included the lyrics below...they are amazing!

    Happy Easter!

K-LOVE - David Crowder "How He Loves" LIVE from K-LOVE Radio on Vimeo.

    How He Loves Us Lyrics

    He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
Bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.
    When all of a sudden,
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory,
And I realise just how beautiful You are,
And how great Your affections are for me.

And oh, how He loves us so,
    Oh how He loves us,
    How He loves us all

    Yeah, He loves us,
    Oh! how He loves us,
    Oh! how He loves us,
    Oh! how He loves.

We are His portion and He is our prize,
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes,
If grace is an ocean, we’re all sinking.
And Heaven meets earth like an unforseen kiss,
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest,
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets,
When I think about, the way…

    Birthday Month

My hubby is quite the character. Each May he deems it his "birthday month" and he celebrates the entire month through. And by celebrate I mean whenever he wants something he reminds me "but its my birthday month!" and I usually relent.

So this year I'm claiming March as my birthday month too! I figure it will be fun to have an excuse to celebrate, right? The month is starting off great. The Bright Side Project (which I am lucky to be a part of) turned one today and we have some amazing giveaways going on right now. I'm looking forward to taking a day trip to NOLA this weekend to see "Dream Come True" an exhibit at the art museum. And the first day of Spring is right around the corner (and we'll get more daylight soon too!)

So to kick off my "birthday month" I'm making my dream wish list. Remember as a kid making mile long gift wish lists and truly believing each and every item would be delivered to you on that day? I miss that kind of magical thinking! As an adult, I now know how lucky + blessed I am to be able to have such a superficial wish list when so many around the world are dreaming of basic needs being met. God is good!

    Happy Mardi Gras!

I'm off reveling in Fat Tuesday fun today. Please join me at The Bright Side Project for a very fun and tasty giveaway from one of my favorite NOLA shops. Happy Mardi Gras!

    Carnival Time

Mardi Gras is around the corner so between that and the Saints going to the Super Bowl Louisiana is looking extra festive these days. King Cakes are no longer decorated only in purple, gold and green but some are donning black and gold instead. If you don't live in the area, OR if just want to try your hand at making your yumminess check out my King Cake recipe below. The photos are from my first attempt last year. It was so tasty and easy too. You truly can revel in the holiday no matter where you are!

    Ingredients:

    For the Cake
    • 1/2 cup of butter, softened
    • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
    • 3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 envelopes active dry yeast
    • 3 eggs
    • 5 cups of all-purpose flour
    • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
    • 1 egg white
    Cinnamon-Sugar Filling:
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
    White Icing:
    • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
    • 3 tablespoons whole milk
    Colored Sugar

    Instructions:

    1. Melt the butter in the microwave in a medium mixing bowl Add the evaporated milk, 3/4 cup of the sugar, tablespoon of ground cinnamon and the salt. Stir so that the sugar dissolves. Allow to cool.
    2. Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water and stir in the remaining teaspoon sugar. Allow to stand for 10 minutes, until foamy. If the yeast does not foam up it is not live so you’ll have to start over with new yeast and sugar.
    3. Add the yeast mixture to the butter and milk mixture. Add the eggs and lemon zest and whisk together vigorously, until well blended.
    4. Whisk in the flour, 1 cup at a time, until you have a thick paste–about 3 cups flour. Then switch to a wooden spoon and continue adding flour and mixing well. (I used my kitchenaid bread attachment) When you have added all the flour, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured wooden board and knead it with your hands, which you have dusted with flour, until the dough is smooth and elastic, about a dozen turns.
    5. Place the dough into a large clean bowl that you have sprayed with vegetable oil cooking spray. Turn the dough to coat all sides with spray. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and allow the dough to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. (I heat the oven for 1 minute, then turn off oven before putting dough in overnight)
    6. Make the cinnamon-sugar filling: Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small dish and stir well.
    7. Punch the dough down and divide the dough in two. Roll out each half into a 10 by 15 inch rectangle. Brush each rectangle with half of the melted butter and then sprinkle each rectangle with half of the cinnamon-sugar filling mixture. Roll up along the long end like a jelly roll. Press the roll together at the seam, sealing with water if necessary. Wind the two rolls together, forming one thick piece. On a baking sheet sprayed with vegetable oil cooking spray, form the dough into a circle and seal the ends together.
    8. Cover with a tea towel and allow the cake to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until it almost doubles in size.
    9. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Whisk the egg white with 1 tablespoon water. Brush the top of the cake with the egg white. Bake the cake for 35 minutes, until it is browned and sounds hollow when tapped.
    10. Make the white icing: Combine the sugar and milk in a small dish and whisk until smooth.
    11. Allow the cake to cool slightly then drizzle with icing (if you let it cool completely the icing dries quicker and it is harder to keep sugar sprinkles from falling off) Sprinkle the colored sugar in striped patterns over the icing.
    12. Slice across the width of the cake into thin slices to serve. Makes about 12 nice sizes slices.

    Happy New Year!

Can you believe we are embarking on 2010? Doesn't it sound so futuristic and far off? But it's not! In a few short hours we will all be celebrating a new decade. Here's hoping that you have a great night celebrating and that the new year brings us all great blessings and joy.

Wishing you a bubbly, sparkling, beautiful new year,

    French Essentials

A couple of friends of mine are headed to Paris as we speak. Their holiday has me imagining a New Year's Eve there to be incredibly memorable and romantic. Clare Owen's illustrations seem to embody my dreams of the city this time of year. Trés beau!

    Kitchen Calendar

My kitchen needs one of these...both of these!

The tea towel calendars by Claudia Pearson are so retro chic! I always see lovely vintage calendar tea towels at flea markets, etc and it is neat to see this tradition carried on.
Her illustrated paper calendar is great too! It would be just darling in my kitchen...the colors would all coordinate nicely. And to top things off every month's illustration will show yummy delights that coincide with seasonal recipes on her blog.

I know January is days away but it is not too late to scoop up a new calendar right?

    The Perfect NYE Dress

I hope you had a wonderful holiday! Next up, New year's Eve right? Each year we attend a very casual party at a family member's home...a bonfire, lots of fireworks and good food. Pretty dresses are not exactly an option. While this NYE tradition is one I wouldn't trade, I do kind of wish sometimes I'd have an excuse to buy the perfect celebratory dress. This would be my pick this year if I was in the market.

What are your New Year's Even plans? How do you plan to ring in the new year?

    Tasty Village Treats

I may have a slight addiction to cake pans from Williams Sonoma and I really want to add this one to my collection. Would these be adorable packaged individually as gifts for neighbors, teachers and friends? The dusting of powdered sugar "snow" is really seals the deal for me.
